Peridot is a rare, gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine that's known for its lime-green color It's a magnesium and iron silicate, and its iron content gives it its yellowish-green color.

Peridot is usually a medium-dark green color, but can range from yellowish-green to olive to brownish-green. The most desirable peridot is a rich green with no visible inclusions.

Hardness. Peridot has a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.

Cut. The ideal cut for peridot enhances its color and brilliance. Popular cuts include emerald and round and oval. Peridot's color doesn't change under different lighting conditions, unlike fake peridot. Peridot has been associated with the sun and compassion throughout history:

Ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed peridot was the "gem of the Sun" and wore it as a talisman to protect against nightmares.

Crusades. Peridot was used to adorn religious objects during the Crusades.
