Sapphires are steeped in myths and legends. Sapphires have been associated with a variety of meanings and powers throughout history.

Protection

In ancient Greece and Rome, Kings and Queens believed that Sapphires protected them from harm and envy. Early Christian Kings wore Sapphires in rings for the protective powers it was believed Sapphires carry.


Love and commitment

Sapphires historically became a symbol of love and commitment. Ancient Kings would give their Queens Sapphires to symbolize their undying love.


Heaven

In the Middle Ages, Clergy wore Blue Sapphires to symbolize Heaven. The celestial Blue Color of Sapphires was thought to attract divine favor and inculcate wise judgment.

Some believed that Sapphires would prevent "impure" thoughts and wouldn't shine if worn by someone who wasn't chaste.


Spiritual enlightenment

Buddhists believed that Sapphires brought them spiritual enlightenment.

In Hindu mythology, the roots of the Kalpavriksha, a wish-fulfilling divine tree, are made of Sapphires.


Oracle guidance

The Greeks wore Sapphires for guidance when seeking answers from the Oracle.


Healing

Sapphires were associated with healing in the Bible.


Ivan the Terrible

The fearsome Czar of Russia was known to be an avid Sapphire lover. He believed that Sapphires preserved and increased courage, gave the heart joy, and cleared the sight.


The name sapphire comes from the Greek word sappheiros, which probably referred to lapis lazuli.
